Eritrean.net is a directory of Eritrean businesses, events and jobs, for Eritreans wherever they live. This page explains what we collect when you use it, why, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it. If anything here is unclear, write to us at info@eritrean.net.

What we collect

When you simply browse, we do not ask who you are. Our server keeps ordinary technical logs of requests - the address your connection comes from, the page asked for, the time and your browser's name - so we can keep the site running and stop abuse. We count how often a contact link on a listing is used (a call, a WhatsApp message, an email, a website visit) as one number per listing per day; these counts contain nothing about who clicked.

When you create an account, we keep your name, your email address and your password (stored only as a one-way hash we cannot read). You can add a language, a country and a city you prefer, and a profile picture.

When you add something - a business listing, an event, a job, an organiser or employer page, opening hours or photographs - we keep what you wrote and uploaded, and who submitted it. Published content is shown to everyone; your name as its author is not.

When you claim a listing or ask for it to be verified, you may send us evidence that it is yours. Claim documents are stored encrypted, only the moderators deciding the claim can open them, and they are deleted once the claim is decided. For verification we record the kind of evidence we checked, not the evidence itself.

When you report something, moderators see who reported it; the person reported never does. If you report without an account, we ask for your email address to confirm the report and to tell you the outcome. We delete that address once we have told you, and delete unconfirmed reports after two days. To spot many reports from one place we keep a short code made from your internet address, which cannot be turned back into the address.

When you write to us through the contact form, your message, name and email address come to our team by email so we can answer.

When you save or follow things - saved events and jobs, organisers you follow, job alerts - we keep that list so we can remind you. Organisers see how many people saved an event, never who.

Cookies and similar

We use only the cookies the site needs to work: one that keeps you signed in (your session), one that protects forms against forgery, and small ones that remember your language, light or dark appearance and whether the side menu is open. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.

Services we use

• Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page visits in aggregate, without cookies and without identifying you, so we know which pages are useful.
• Cloudflare Turnstile may check that a person, not a program, is filling in a form such as signing in or reporting.
• OpenStreetMap draws the map on a listing: your browser fetches the map pictures from OpenStreetMap's servers, which see your internet address and that the request came from Eritrean.net. We look up a listing's address on OpenStreetMap's search service to place it on the map; that sends the business's address, not anything about you.
• The TV page plays a channel's live stream straight from the broadcaster's servers, and only once you press play. Those servers see your internet address, as any website you visit does. We find the streams through iptv-org's public list; nothing about you is sent to iptv-org.
• IP geolocation by DB-IP: to greet you with your city on the homepage, our server looks up the rough location of your internet address in DB-IP's free database, which we keep on our own server. Nothing is sent to DB-IP, and neither your address nor the place it points to is stored.
• Emailit delivers the emails we send you.
• Our hosting provider runs the servers where everything above is stored.

What we send you

Emails about things you did or asked for - confirming your address, a password reset, a decision about something you submitted, reported or appealed, reminders for events you saved, alerts you set up. Messages about somebody else's content, such as a new event from an organiser you follow or a job alert, each carry a link to stop them without signing in.

How long we keep things

We keep your account and what you published until you delete them. Some things go sooner on their own: unconfirmed visitor reports after two days, refused pictures thirty days after the decision, claim evidence once the claim is decided, and your data export seven days after it is made. Moderation decisions and the audit log of staff actions are kept so decisions can be explained and appealed.

Your choices

From your account settings you can:

• download a copy of your data at any time;
• change your name, email address, preferences and password;
• delete your account. Your name, email address, password, preferences and pictures are removed. Listings, events and jobs you published stay on the site, no longer linked to you; if you want those taken down as well, write to us and we will.

You can also write to info@eritrean.net to ask what we hold about you, to correct it, or to object to how we use it.

Children

Eritrean.net is not meant for children under 16, and we do not knowingly let them create accounts.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will say so on the site before the change takes effect, and update the date at the top.
